When planning or upgrading a fire alarm system for a building in India, one of the first questions that comes up is: should you go with a conventional panel or an addressable panel? Both types comply with IS:2189 standards and serve the same fundamental purpose — detecting fire and triggering alarms — but they differ significantly in how precisely they pinpoint a fire's location, how easy they are to scale, and what they cost. How a Conventional Fire Panel Works

A conventional fire alarm control panel (FACP) organises a building into separate zones. Each zone is a dedicated wiring circuit that connects multiple detectors and call points in parallel. When any device on a zone activates — say, a smoke detector on Zone 3 — the panel lights up that zone indicator and triggers the alarm, but it cannot tell you which specific detector fired.

How an Addressable Fire Panel Works

An addressable fire alarm panel assigns a unique digital address to every single device — each smoke detector, heat detector, and manual call point. All devices connect to the panel via one or two continuous loops (also called SLC loops — Signalling Line Circuits). When any device activates, the panel immediately displays its specific address and location, for example: "Smoke Detector — 2nd Floor, Server Room, Device #14." Security and fire response teams know exactly where to go within seconds.

For small, single-floor or two-floor buildings — a standalone shop, a small school, a petrol pump, or a small office up to about 500 sq m — a conventional panel is often perfectly adequate and more budget-friendly. The limited number of zones is manageable, and the lower device count means it's easy for staff to search the right area when a zone alarm fires.

For multi-storey buildings, hospitals, hotels, warehouses, IT parks, malls and factories with large floor areas or high occupancy, an addressable system is strongly recommended and often required by fire authorities for the fire NOC. Device-level identification drastically reduces response time, and the ability to add more detectors on a loop without rewiring makes it far more future-proof.
