What Is Aspirating Smoke Detection (ASD)?

An aspirating smoke detector is an active detection system. A built-in aspirator (fan) continuously draws air samples through a network of pipes fitted with precisely engineered sampling holes. That air is carried back to a central detector unit where it passes through a filter and then a laser-based (or LED) chamber that measures smoke obscuration with extreme precision.

Because the system samples air rather than waiting for smoke to drift to it, it detects combustion products at concentrations far below what a conventional spot smoke detector can sense — often while a fault is still overheating and before any visible smoke appears. This gives facility managers time to investigate and intervene before an incident becomes a fire.

ASD vs VESDA — What's the Difference?

There is no functional difference: VESDA is a brand of aspirating smoke detection manufactured by Xtralis (now part of Honeywell). ASD is the generic category. Just as "Xerox" became shorthand for photocopying, "VESDA" is often used to mean any aspirating system. Other reputable ASD brands include Wagner Titanus, Securiton SecuriRAS, Bosch and Kidde.
