Clean-agent gas is only one family of fixed fire suppression. Kitchens, transformer yards, fuel stores, paint booths, turbine halls and warehouses run on very different systems — CO₂ flooding, wet-chemical hoods, foam deluge, water-mist and modular units — and every one of them is single-shot: once it fires, it must be recharged before it can protect again. CO₂ Total-Flooding & Local-Application Systems
High-pressure CO₂ systems protect switchgear rooms, generator sets, paint lines and machinery. They store liquid CO₂ at about 57 bar (21 °C) and are recharged by weight.
- Recharge triggers: after any discharge, or when a cylinder loses more than about 10% of its charge by weight (CO₂ banks are weighed, not gauged).
- Process: weigh each cylinder, refill liquid CO₂ to the stamped charge at a licensed facility, replace the discharge hose/valve seals, refit and leak-test.
- Hydro-testing: high-pressure CO₂ cylinders are hydrostatically tested about every 5 years (follow the cylinder stamp / PESO).
- Safety: CO₂ is an asphyxiant, so lock-offs, pneumatic time delays, odourisers and occupancy warnings must be re-tested after every recharge — CO₂ is never used in normally occupied rooms. Governed by NFPA 12.
Commercial-Kitchen Wet-Chemical Systems
The stainless hood system over a commercial cooking range (Ansul R-102-type, to UL 300 / NFPA 17A) sprays a wet-chemical agent that saponifies burning oil. It is the most frequently discharged fixed system — and the rules on recharge are strict.
- Recharge after every discharge — no exceptions. Any activation, even a small one, empties the agent tank and must be fully recharged.
- Replace the fusible links (the fixed-temperature detectors over each appliance) and the gas/CO₂ or nitrogen cartridge that expels the agent — these are single-use.
- Six-monthly service: UL 300 / NFPA 17A require a competent inspection every 6 months, checking nozzle caps, links, tank pressure and appliance coverage after any kitchen re-layout.
- Agent refill: the wet-chemical tank is recharged with the manufacturer's certified agent to the correct volume.
Foam Suppression Systems (AFFF / AR-AFFF)
Foam deluge, bladder-tank and monitor systems protect fuel depots, transformer yards and flammable-liquid stores. Here the consumable is the foam concentrate, not a gas.
- After discharge: refill the concentrate tank/bladder with the correct concentrate (typically 3% or 6% AFFF, or AR-AFFF for polar solvents) to the design volume and re-pressurise.
- Concentrate has a shelf life: it must be sampled and laboratory-tested annually (per NFPA 11); degraded or separated concentrate is replaced, and most concentrates are replaced on a roughly 10–15 year basis if tests still pass.
- Also check: the proportioner/inductor ratio, bladder integrity and foam-maker nozzles when recharging.
- Note: many operators are transitioning to fluorine-free foam (F3) — confirm compatibility before mixing or topping up concentrate types.
Water-Mist Systems
Water-mist systems (to NFPA 750) protect machinery spaces, turbines and heritage buildings using fine water droplets, often driven by high-pressure gas.
- After discharge: refill the water reservoir and recharge the nitrogen or air driving cylinders to design pressure; pump-driven systems need the pump and controller re-checked.
- Cylinders: the high-pressure gas cylinders follow the same 5-yearly hydro-test discipline as other high-pressure cylinders.
- Also check: mist nozzles and strainers for blockage, and water quality in the reservoir.
Modular & Tube-Based (Direct-Release) Systems
Compact modular units and detection-tube (“direct low-pressure”) systems protect electrical panels, CNC machines, wind-turbine nacelles and small enclosures with a self-contained agent cylinder — often a clean agent, dry powder or aerosol.
- After discharge: the modular cylinder is recharged or exchanged for a factory-charged unit, and the detection tube (if burst) is replaced.
- Periodic check: weigh/pressure-check the cylinder and inspect the tube for damage at each service.
- Aerosol generators are typically replaced rather than refilled once expended or expired.
The Rules Every “Other” System Shares
Whatever the agent, four principles hold across all of these systems:
- Recharge after any discharge — partial or full. Restore the system to its full design charge; a half-charged system is an unprotected one.
- Weigh or pressure-check periodically so slow losses are caught before they matter.
- Hydro-test high-pressure cylinders to the stamped schedule (about 5 years for CO₂, inert gas and water-mist driving cylinders).
- Keep it on an AMC and keep the certificates — your fire NOC, auditor and insurer will ask for them.

After a partial discharge, do I recharge the whole system?
Yes — always restore the system to its full design charge. A partially charged suppression system may not reach the concentration, coverage or duration it was engineered for, so a partial discharge is treated the same as a full one: recharge, replace single-use parts, and re-commission.
Who can legally recharge these systems in India?
A competent, licensed fire-safety agency using manufacturer-certified agents. High-pressure gas cylinders (CO₂, inert gas, water-mist driving cylinders) fall under PESO's Gas Cylinder Rules, 2016, so their refilling must be done by a PESO-licensed facility.
